What is Visceral Manipulation?

Therapists utilizing visceral manipulation therapy assess the dynamic functional actions alongside the somatic structures involved in individual activities. They also evaluate the quality of these somatic structures and their functions in relation to an overall harmonious pattern, with motion serving as the gauge for determining quality.

The visceral system depends on the interconnected synchronicity between the motions of all the organs and other structures of the body. At optimal health, this harmonious relationship remains stable despite the body's endless varieties of motion. However, when one organ cannot move in harmony with its surrounding viscera due to abnormal tone, adhesions, or displacement, it creates resistance against the body's other organs, as well as muscular, membranous, fascial, and osseous structures. This disharmony results in fixed, abnormal points of tension that the body must navigate around. Consequently, that chronic irritation can lead to disease and dysfunction across many systems of the body - musculoskeletal, vascular, nervous, urinary, respiratory, and digestive, to name a few.
